PhD position in wetland restoration – Michigan Technological University

A PhD position is available for a highly motivated and qualified individual to
conduct research in the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science
(SFRES) at Michigan Technological University (MTU). The candidate will
participate in a cooperative research venture between SFRES and Seney National
Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and study various ecological responses to reinstating
historical hydrological patterns in wetlands located in the Seney NWR.
Ecological responses may include vegetation communities, soil ecology,
ecophysiological responses of existing plants, and/or ecohydrology. A strong
background in field based research, experimental design and statistics is
highly desired.

Seney NWR in Michigan’s eastern Upper Peninsula was established in 1935 by
Executive Order for the protection and production of migratory birds and other
wildlife. At nearly 96,000 acres, Seney NWR is one of the larger National
Wildlife Refuges east of the Mississippi River. Management goals include the
integration of conservation, preservation, and restoration principles on the
landscape for wildlife benefit. For more information see:

The quality of life for MTU students is outstanding. MTU is located in
Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula on the South Shore of Lake Superior. The region
is dominated by publicly-owned forests, and is rated as a great place for
outdoor adventure (see National Geographic Adventure Magazine). MTU is located
in the small community of Houghton, Michigan and as such has the desirable
qualities of semi rural living - safe, inexpensive, and friendly.

Consideration of applications begins immediately and will continue until the
position is filled. Please send a cover letter that states your research
interests and provides names and contact information for three references.
Also include your curriculum vitae and any other relevant material
(publications). Ideally, the successful applicant will start Jan 2012, but
