Tenure-track Position in Biology: Vertebrate Zoologist / Anatomy and Physiology

The Department of Biology at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) invites
applications for a tenure-track position at the ASSISTANT PROFESSOR level to
begin September 2012. We seek a candidate with expertise and experience in
the anatomy, physiology, or whole-organism systems biology of vertebrates.
The area of specialization is open, and could include vertebrate or
comparative anatomy, histology, biomechanics, or comparative physiology.
However, it is essential that the candidate be able to help develop and
teach a two-semester, cadaver-based course in human anatomy and physiology.

The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to excellence in
teaching, experience with and/or a commitment to using and developing
innovative teaching methods, and the ability to engage graduate (M.S. level)
and undergraduate students in research. Teaching expectations will include
the cadaver-based Human Anatomy & Physiology sequence (mentioned above), as
well as General Biology and advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in
the area of specialization. The ability to teach a course involving a major
group of animals is desirable, but not required. In addition to teaching
and maintaining an active research program, the successful candidate will
also be expected to collaborate with NEIUÂ’s Student Center for Science
Engagement and other NEIU units to enhance our studentsÂ’ preparation for
careers in the health professions, and to participate in service to the
department, college and university. An earned doctorate in biology with an
emphasis in anatomy and/or physiology or a related field is required;
teaching experience and experience with cadavers are desirable, but not
required.

Northeastern Illinois University is a comprehensive state university of
approximately 12,000 commuter students located on the northwest side of
Chicago and is recognized as having one of the most ethnically diverse

V-HSI/STEM grant from the US Department of Education that will directly
benefit the Department of Biology in a variety of ways, including the
addition of this new tenure-line faculty position, renovation of two
teaching laboratories (including a new cadaver lab and new equipment for
computerized acquisition and analysis of physiological data), and provision
of increased support for faculty-student research.

To apply for the position, please submit a single, electronic PDF that
contains the following materials in the following order: (1) a cover letter
describing your interest in the position; (2) a current curriculum vitae;
(3) a teaching statement that describes your teaching experience and
philosophy, plans for a cadaver-based anatomy/physiology course, and a list
of courses (at both the undergraduate and graduate levels) you feel
qualified to teach; (4) a research statement that describes your current and
future research goals and plans and their relevance to this position; (5) a
diversity statement that describes your experience with diverse populations
of students and the importance of diversity in teaching and research
communities; and (6) an unofficial copy of your graduate transcripts. Send
the complete PDF to [email protected].
In addition, please provide three reference letters that address both
research and teaching potential as they relate to this position. Letters
should be submitted as PDFs directly to Dr. John Kasmer (Department Chair)
at [email protected].
