VIRGINIA, BLACKSBURG

The College of Natural Resources and Environment at Virginia Tech has four
departments (Geography, Wood Science and Forest Products, Fish and Wildlife
Conservation, and Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation) that are
steeped in traditions emphasizing sustainability. Our mission integrates the
economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable systems. Our
programs address the science and practice of sustaining energy and material
systems, conserving biological diversity and endangered species, sustaining
economic production and markets, planning water and land use, monitoring and
geospatial analysis of environmental conditions, marketing ecosystem services,
addressing climate change, engaging community in public and private lands
conservation, and a host of other problems and challenges that emerge whenever
and wherever people use land and water resources to build thriving and
sustainable communities. The Department of Geography seeks to develop both
human and physical perspectives on environmental issues and critical thinking
skills needed to address the complex problems of sustaining natural resources
and the environment. More specifically, we want (1) to provide leadership and
visibility on a topic of global importance, (2) to prepare students with
abilities and perspectives that help them contribute to current and future
societal needs, and, (3) in the long standing tradition of the study of
nature-society relations in Geography, to develop a full undergraduate option
that examines the cultural, political, and environmental aspects of
sustainability.

The Department of Geography at Virginia Tech is seeking applicants for a
tenure-track position in environmental sustainability. The position will be
filled at the assistant professor level. Specifically we seek a human
geographer specializing in the theory, analysis and application of sustainable
practices in human-environment interaction. Individuals must have their PhD in
Geography, environmental sustainability or in a closely related discipline by
the time of appointment. The candidate must be able to teach large classes in
an undergraduate sequence (Seeking Sustainability) in the university's
Curriculum for a Liberal Education (core curriculum), other undergraduate
and/or graduate courses in her/his specialization, and supervise graduate
students in our MS program and our interdisciplinary PhD program in Geospatial
and Environmental Analysis. Evidence of an established research track in human
geography/ sustainability must be provided. We seek an energetic faculty member
committed to excellent teaching and dedicated to research with the skills
needed to secure external funding. An ability to develop a strong, externally

Virginia Tech. The specific research specialty is open, but preference will be
given to candidates who can strengthen research collaboration within the
