The Department of Natural Resource Management at SDSU is seeking an Assistant 
Professor/Wildlife Ecologist, full-time, 10-month, tenure-track position.

Description: This is a 10-month, tenure-track position in the Department of 
Natural Resource Management. The appointment is 75% teaching/25% research.

Principal Duties: Teach Principles of Wildlife Management (WL 411) and Habitat 
Conservation and Management (WL 400) annually, and Environmental Conservation 
(WL 110; service course) and Wildlife and Fisheries Techniques (WL 230; team 
taught) every other year. Periodically teach Seminars, Special Topics, and 
Special Problems as needed. Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate 
students. Obtain outside grant and contract research funding, including support 
for graduate students. Participate in University, College, and Department 
governance and service; participate in professional service; and participate in 
outreach activities.

Qualifications: Required: Completed Ph.D. in Wildlife Science or closely 
related area by time of application deadline (March 16, 2012). Demonstrated 
record of experience in wildlife habitat management.  Demonstrated record of 
research and scholarly activity. Appropriate oral, written, and interpersonal 
communications skills. Desired:  Commitment to a highly collegial working 
environment. Experience in grant writing. Quantitative skills.  Spatial 
analysis skills. Computer and technology skills as they relate to teaching, 
research, and service. Interest in biofuels as one aspect of overall research 
program.  Teaching experience. Professional service.  Experience working with 
diverse groups or cultures.  Able to obtain Certification as a Wildlife 
Biologist from The Wildlife Society within 5 years.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications.

Starting Date: July to August, 2012.

University/Department/Community: South Dakota State University is a Land-Grant 
institution with approximately 12,700 students. The Department of Natural 
Resource Management (http://www.sdstate.edu/nrm/) is located within the College 
of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, and houses the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. 
degree programs in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences.  Also included within the 
Department are faculty members in Ecology and Environmental Science, Range 
Science, and the Geographic Information Science Center of Excellence.  There 
are approximately 340 undergraduate and 60 graduate majors in Wildlife and 
Fisheries Sciences. The Department houses the South Dakota Cooperative Fish and 
Wildlife Research Unit. There are 28 faculty members in Natural Resource 
Management, with 13 faculty members in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, 
including Cooperative Research Unit personnel. SDSU is located in Brookings, 
South Dakota, a community of 22,000 people on the eastern border of the state.  
The city has an excellent K-12 educational system. The city is also accessible 
to major medical facilities, has an active social and cultural environment, and 
has numerous lakes, parks, and other public lands within a short drive.  Sioux 
Falls, a city of approximately 154,000 with a metropolitan population size of 
228,000 and the largest city in the state, is a 45-minute drive to the south.
