Taught by Sven Lautenbach, PhD, Helmholtz Institute for Environmental Research and George Mason University, Statistics for Ecology and Conservation Biology provides an in-depth introduction to advanced statistical analyses used in cutting-edge ecological research and conservation. During this two-week intensive residential session, through lectures, discussions, and extensive hands-on computer lab exercises you will focus on increasing your knowledge of statistical methods like generalized linear models and generalized linear mixed models, the assumptions underlying those methods, and how to interpret and explain their results. Learn how to choose appropriate analyses for different research questions, conduct sophisticated statistical analyses and deal with the limitations of real datasets in the context of conservation science. During every lab exercise, participants use R, a free software environment for statistical computing and graphicsgaining proficiency with R is integral to the course.

Participants should have previously completed basic statistics coursework or have previous experience with statistics.

Course prices cover instruction, course materials, meals, lodging, and airport transfer IAD-Front Royal. Professional training: $2,500 (participants earn 6 continuing education units, CEUs)

Three-credit graduate course: $2,750 for in-state (Virginia) students/ $3,800.75 out-of-state (3 credits).

2011 course participant comments:

“Sven is a gem. He is an excellent instructor, patient and gentle – superb attributes for those students in the class that may have anxiety about math/statistics. He is also amply qualified to teach this class, with a deep understanding of statistics, distribution theory, hypothesis -testing, and application to conservation problems.”

“Statistics is a very scary subject for me and after this course I feel incredibly more comfortable with the topic. . . The combination of statistical theory with direct application of the principles using R has been a very powerful method to crystallize my understanding. The concentration of the information into this intensive time-frame provided far more continuity and flow than the normal classroom setting. “
