Many of you know, I am not a plant person in general. I did make a recent post on Carivorous Plants, which for me was a great way to start any unit on Plants.
That along with a day of hiking to a local Bog we had close to our campus. Pitcher Plants all over the place. Someone e-mailed me after my post and the issue of keeping Carnivorous Plants alive in the Classroom is just not simple. They talked about Orchids. We have discussed many other ways to turn Students on to plants. I did not have a greenhouse, but thanks to our local police dept., was able to build one in my classroom using lights confiscated from local marijuana growers. These lights are not inexpesive, but worked nicely on top of the 4 cages we raised Coturnix Quail in. Well, here is my point....a nice article in this months Smitsonian on the beauty of Orchids and some of the Biology involved here. See page 60 for the start of the article. Thank you.
