POSITION DETAILS
EcoHealth Alliance and Center for Infection and Immunity (CII) at Columbia 
University are seeking a Research Assistant to join an international team of 
scientists investigating the threat of emerging infectious diseases.   The 
project is a USAID-funded initiative and seeks to 1) discover viruses in 
wildlife before they become global pandemics, and 2) uncover the factors that 
drive their emergence in the human population.  This unique project utilizes 
the combined skills of our ecologists, modelers, virologists and field 
veterinarians to find new viruses in wildlife from more than 20 countries 
around the world.
The position will be based full-time in the Center for Infection & Immunity 
(CII) at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. The successful 
candidate will assist the pathogen discovery team. The CII team will provide 
strong mentorship and training to the right candidate, who will be 
exceptionally self-motivated, and interested in wildlife disease, molecular 
virology, viral ecology and the emergence of pathogens into the human 
population.

Additional responsibilities will include attending weekly meetings at EcoHealth 
Alliance headquarters (30 minutes away via public transportation from CII) in 
NYC as well as participating in some paper writing.

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates should hold a Master's degree in a relevant subject, though 
candidates without a Master's should not be dissuaded from applying if they 
have significant laboratory experience.  Candidate is expected have at least 2+ 
years experience with molecular diagnostics.  Essential skills include nucleic 
acid extractions, PCR (real-time and conventional) and cloning.  Exceptional 
attention to detail is very important.  Desired skills include next-generation 
sequencing, in-situ hybridisation, immunohistochemistry, serology, protein 
expression, tissue-culture and virus purification.  Priority will be given to 
candidates that have experience of working with large sample sets, and of 
working within BSL3 labs.

A strong sense of team spirit, cultural sensitivity, excellent communication 
skills, and diplomacy is expected. Experience working with an international 
team is a plus. Fluency in English is required.
