Symposium and Webinar: Vertebrate Responses to Bark Beetles
Announcement and Call for Papers
Laramie, WY
University of Wyoming Union
April 5-6, 2012

The University of Wyoming and USDA Forest Service Region 2 are co-sponsoring a
symposium focused on vertebrate responses to the bark beetle epidemic occurring
in the central Rocky Mountains. The symposium will bring together academic,
state, and federal agency scientists and managers to facilitate information
exchange and share insights on the current state of understanding of vertebrate
responses to the epidemic. Other objectives include:
To identify knowledge gaps and research needs in understanding of wildlife
responses to the epidemic.

· To enhance understanding of long-term vertebrate responses and begin
to make predictions about future forest wildlife communities and strategies
required to effectively manage for forest changes.

· To convene discussions to help prioritize research and monitoring,
identify management considerations for wildlife, and explore opportunities for
coordination.

Session 1: Ecology of Bark Beetle Epidemics: An overview of bark beetle
epidemics from various perspectives: entomology, forest ecology, wildlife and
aquatic ecology, and land management.

Session 2: Current Research and Monitoring: Presentations of ongoing work
investigating vertebrate response to bark beetle epidemics in western North
America.

Session 3: Research needs and management implications: Invited researchers
and resource managers will participate in breakout groups to identify key
information gaps for future research, brainstorm wildlife considerations when
designing land management activities, and explore future collaborative
opportunities to improve our understanding of vertebrate responses.

Registration is free, but is required for attendance at the symposium. Space is
limited and presenters will be given priority. For a registration form or more
information, please contact: Tracey Johnson, University of Wyoming
([email protected]; 307-766-5315). WEBINAR: To attend the webinar, please email
