VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR – ENERGY SPECIALIST
SONOMA STATE UNIVERSITY

The Department of Environmental Studies and Planning (ENSP) at Sonoma 
State University (SSU) seeks applicants for a one-year Visiting Assistant 
Professor position beginning August 2012.  The selected candidate will be 
an Energy Specialist with expertise in thermal and electrical energy 
management, passive solar design and other small-scale energy 
applications.  Experience in energy policy at the California and national 
level is a plus. We are searching for a dynamic educator and scholar who 
will contribute to ENSP’s Energy Management and Design (EMD) program and 
to the department as a whole.  For more information about ENSP see the

EMD is a BA and BS degree program designed to provide a solid foundation 
of focused technical courses and the flexibility to meet personal career 
goals in the advancing and expanding energy fields.  Students in the EMD 
program are taught specific management and design skills including heat 
load analysis, electric circuit fundamentals, energy efficient and passive 
solar building design, energy efficient end uses (lighting, motors, HVAC), 
building energy modeling, energy resources and conversion technologies, 
and economics payback analysis. In addition, students have the opportunity 
to expand their knowledge of business management, economics, environmental 
science, physics, and computer science through courses available at SSU. 

DUTIES: The successful candidate will teach three 4-unit courses in EMD 
for upper-division undergraduates in both the fall (2012) and spring 
(2013) semesters. Possible courses include Energy, Technology and Society 
(ENSP 330), Thermal Energy Management (ENSP 337), Electrical Energy 
Management (ENSP 338), Passive Solar Design (ENSP 437) and Small-scale 
Energy (ENSP 438).  Each of these courses typically has two lectures per 
week for the entire semester (2 hours each). Additional duties will 
include some academic advising, career advising, and assisting with 
curricular development and assessment. The selected individual will be 
committed to teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts setting.

QUALIFICATIONS: A PhD in an energy-related field is expected by August 15, 
2012.  ABD PhD candidates will also be considered.  The ideal candidate 
should have excellent teaching abilities and a proven record of 
scholarship.  Candidates who meet the minimum requirements are encouraged
