The University of Georgia is welcoming applicants for our annual Costa Rica Tropical Ecology Programs, based at our campus in San Luis de Monteverde, Costa Rica. We are currently inviting participation by interested undergraduate students at colleges and universities throughout the U.S. We offer two Tropical Ecology programs; a 7-credit Maymester program (running May 14 - June 6, 2012), and a full-semester 18-credit Fall program (running August 30 - November 19, 2012). The application deadline (March 21)for our Maymester program will be extended for qualified applicants.
These interdisciplinary programs focus on the study of tropical environments, their natural history, and their people. The approach is intensive, challenging, and hands-on, with an emphasis on building skills of observation, analysis, and critical thinking. We will apply those skills in carrying out original ecological research in the field. Students live and work at field stations in a variety of tropical habitats throughout Costa Rica, including lowland rain forest, coastal and marine sites, and cloud forest habitats. Applications are welcome from students at all accredited U.S. institutions. Students from outside of Georgia will receive in-state tuition. Participants must be in good academic standing at their home institution. No Spanish background is required; the courses are taught in English by University of Georgia faculty members. Some financial scholarships are available. The program costs are approximately $3000 Maymester) and $9000 (Fall semester), which cover all in-country lodging, meals, and activities (airfare is not included).
