Urban Lot Management Conservation Crew Member

Description:
In cooperation with the California Tahoe Conservancy, the Great Basin
Institute is recruiting an Urban Lot Management Conservation Crew Member to
work as an integral member of a five-person crew on California Tahoe
Conservancy land management and maintenance projects. This is a
labor-intensive and physically demanding position and applicants must
demonstrate their ability to work as a professional, mature team member.
Duties may include: 

o       Operation of tools and equipment including chainsaws, chippers, brush
cutters, and various power/hand tools;
o       Participation in routine safety talks and training sessions;
o       Care, maintenance, and security of State tools, property, and equipment
o       Project/warehouse maintenance;
o       Secondary transport responsibilities for crew and equipment to and from
work sites in State vehicles;
o       Identification of property boundaries/marking project areas;
o       Property maintenance;
o       Fence construction;
o       Hazard tree removal and fuel hazard reduction;
o       Roping/rigging for safe tree removal;
o       Soil erosion control; and 
o       Road and trail removal and stabilization.
 
 Compensation:   
o       This is an AmeriCorps position, and candidates will receive a living
stipend of $7,000 for the summer. This is not an hourly wage or a salary and
is paid to members bi-monthly throughout their term of service. Upon
completion of AmeriCorps service members shall receive an additional
education award in the amount of $2,775 that can be used for paying off
student loans, or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college.

Qualifications:
Required:
o       Ability to work safely and cooperatively in a group setting under a
variety of working conditions;
o       Ability to perform manual labor in rough terrain, lift heavy objects, 
and
work for extended periods of time in various weather conditions;
o       Possession of a valid driver's license, with clean driving record; and 
o       Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal
resident alien status, (2) must be at least 17 years of age and a US citizen
that has received a high school diploma or GED (or be willing to achieve
this before using education award), (3) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps
Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime, or equivalent of two full-time
terms of service), and (4) pass National Sex Offender Public Registry
(NSOPR) and federal criminal background checks.

Desirable:
o       Background in natural resources management or land management; 
o       Ability to drive a tow vehicle; 
o       Demonstrated skills in public relations; 
o       Demonstrated organizational skills; 
o       Familiarity with operation and maintenance of chainsaws, wood chippers,
hand tools, rigging equipment, etc.; and
o       Ability to interpret assessor parcel maps and identify property 
boundaries.
