Sustainability Scientist, South Central Climate Science Center

Position: In collaboration with The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, The Chickasaw 
Nation is

establishing the position of a Sustainability Scientist for the South Central 
Climate Science Center.

This position is a full-time, 12-month appointment located in Norman, OK. This 
position is part of a

cluster hire; other positions are available at http://southcentralclimate.org/.


Salary: $45,000 – $55,000 annual; salary commensurate with skills and 
experience.


Responsibilities: The individual selected for this position will manage the 
government-to government

interactions and facilitate tribal consultation activities between the South 
Central

Climate Science Center (CSC) and the sovereign nations within the CSC region, 
including New

Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. This embedded sustainability scientist 
will focus on the

contributions of the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations, as Consortium members, to 
the CSC. Duties

of this position include the following:

• Ensuring that CSC research is framed holistically and inclusively so as to 
encompass the

themes of environmental sustainability, traditional knowledge, and exposure of 
indigenous

peoples to the impacts of climate change;

• Serving on CSC boards or committees and engaging in strategy sessions, 
workshops, and

partners’ meetings;

• Helping to establish new or integrate existing monitoring and observation 
programs from

tribal governments into the data management system of the CSC;

• Working with tribal education programs to (1) build the scientific capacity 
and workforce of

tribal nations within the context of traditional and cultural practices, (2) 
enhance the

diversity of the Federal workforce, particularly the Department of the Interior 
(DOI), and (3)

participate in the DOI’s youth programs and America’s Great Outdoors;

• Participating in the development of projects and proposals with other members 
of the CSC;

• Aiding in the translation and communication of CSC science to tribal 
officials and resource

managers based on the relationship of trust among tribal nations and with 
tribal citizens;

• Preparing reports for the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations and for the CSC Host 
principal

investigator, as necessary; and

• Conducting CSC-related research as time permits.


Requirements: Applicants should have completed a Masters degree in Environmental

Sustainability, Adaptive Management, Environmental Sciences, or related fields. 
Exceptional

applicants from other disciplines will be considered. Preference given to 
applicants who are citizens

of a tribal nation in the south-central United States. Proficiency with 
computer applications,

including Powerpoint, MS-Word, and Excel is required. Candidates must 
demonstrate an ability to

utilize new software with minimal instruction. The position requires 
well-developed human

relations and communication skills, including written and oral. Applicants 
should be motivated,

have the ability to follow through on projects with minimal supervision, and be 
able to both serve

and lead collegially as a team player.
