Hi,
I just had a chance to test Nikon's new P510 camera ($430) with 42x
optical zoom. It was quite amazing and would likely be an asset during
field surveys. It's light and has amazing image stabilization. My main
concern for the camera is its durability. I suspect it is quite
sensitive to dust, but if you can keep your hands clean, this camera's
power was really beyond belief.
Here are two comparison images one at the full 42X power and the one
from the other extreme. The images are from the Northwest
Lichenologist's Crustose Lichen field survey from Saturday March 31st.
