We are seeking to hire one self-motivated individual with a strong interest and background in avian ecology to conduct point count surveys and foraging observations of breeding songbirds in a variety of different forest types in the Allegheny National Forest (northwest Pennsylvania). This study is part of a larger ongoing project to investigate the indirect effects of deer density on caterpillar and bird community composition and abundance as funded by the National Science Foundation and Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Duties will also include collecting and feeding caterpillars, collecting vegetation data, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and other tasks related to the larger project. This position will begin May 1, 2012 and run until ~the first week in August (end date somewhat flexible). We will provide technicians with training in data collection/entry, survey methods, etc. REQUIRED SKILLS: Candidates must have previous experience and familiarity identifying Northeastern (forest) songbirds aurally and visually. *Please do not apply if you cannot confidently and accurately identify song birds by sight and sound.* Candidates must also be willing to work long hours beginning before sunrise; hike variable terrain, sometimes in poor weather conditions; work independently as well as with others. Competitive applicants should also be well organized, willing to follow instructions, and demonstrate interest in the project. We cannot cover travel costs to the study area but a vehicle will be provided for all field work and trips into town for groceries.
