Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites nominations and applications
for the position of Director of the Touch of Nature Environmental Center
(TONEC). The Director is the chief administrative officer of the TONEC and
reports to the Associate Provost for Academic Administration. The successful
candidate is expected to bring a vision for the future which will inspire
his/her colleagues to pursue excellence in quality academic endeavors in
teaching and research and supportive programming for student needs and
development elements of the University's mission by offering broader and
deeper programming for use by faculty, staff, and students. 

The Center has 9 full-time staff members and 40 seasonal and part-time staff
members and serves Southern Illinois University Carbondale, the region, and
the nation as an outdoor laboratory for experiential learning, a field site
for research, and a provider of therapeutic recreation, environmental
education, outdoor adventure, personal and interpersonal growth experiences
and conference service facilities. The Center is an American Camp

The Director's primary roles are centered on program and development
matters, particularly:

1.    strategic planning and program development

2.    staff development

3.    internal information needs for planning and budgeting

4.    resource and facility enhancement through fundraising and an increase
in external grants.

REQUIREMENTS: 

The successful candidate must possess a Master's degree in: outdoor
education, therapeutic recreation, environmental education, administration,
recreational education, or related degree. Applicants must also possess
three years' experience in program administration with evidence of budget
management and supervisory experience in program development, promotion,
implementation, and facility coordination. 

This is a security-sensitive position. Before any offer of employment is
made, the University will conduct a pre-employment background investigation
that includes a criminal background check. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The primary role of the Director, Touch of Nature position is to direct and
oversee the overall operations of the Touch of Nature Environmental Center
including but not limited to:

1.    Oversee outdoor research laboratories for faculty, staff and students
studying quality academic pursuits in the natural environment (i.e.
therapeutic recreation studies, environmental studies, etc.)

2.    Serve as liaison with university academic units that provide research,
teaching, and service opportunities

3.    Supervise facility operations - lodging, food services, and grounds
maintenance

4.    Supervise all educational camp programs and services as well as
oversee all program budgets - Environmental Education program, Therapeutic
Recreation program, Underway Adventures program, Spectrum Wilderness
program, Camp Little Giant, retreats and events

5.    Supervise all administrative operations - fiscal, personnel
(recruitment and retention), marketing and sales, program development and
delivery, communications, and public relations

6.    Ensure overall operations comply with University policies and
procedures

7.    Maintain positive working relationships among department's faculty and
staff, university personnel, representatives of user groups and external
public

8.    Develop annual and long-range plans for facility operation,
maintenance, and program development

9.    Develop alternative usage strategies for the Touch of Nature
facilities that promote patronage from public, private, and university
groups.

Effective Date of Appointment: The position is available July 1, 2012.
