Dear colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the MCED award for ecological
modeling. The award was announced in 2011 for the first time.
Young modelers can apply, who finished their bachelor, masters, or PhD
degree within the last 3 years. The best nominee will win *500 EUR* (~700
USD), the following prizes will be MCED textbooks.

The intention of the award is to foster the development and application of
modern ecological modeling methods that can help to expand the
understanding of complex ecological dynamics. With this focus, the MCED
award follows the eponymous textbook for ecological modeling which has been
recently published by Springer Publishing House and which provides a
curriculum for ecological modeling for students, either for a university
course or for self-learning.

The MCED editors together with Springer Publishing House invite young
ecologists who:
• analyze ecological phenomena using ecological modeling approaches in
an innovative way.
• apply new modelling methods and techniques and thereby contribute to
applied or theoretical ecology
• use modelling frameworks to bridge the gap between basic science and
application enhance the understanding of complex ecological processes and
dynamics
As application, please mail-in the form which is available on
www.mced-ecology.org under the section award2012. Here, you will have to
explain, why you are eligible, what topics you work on, what are your
modeling approaches, and in what sense you are enhancing the understanding
of complex ecological dynamics while applying modeling methods. A crucial
conditions is, that your work is published, therefore, you must add a copy
of the thesis/the publication that you are referring to. A committee,
formed by the editors, the president of the GfÖ and representatives of the
GfÖ Young Modelers Group will decide on the submitted proposals by August
15th .The award ceremony will be held during the next GfÖ-Conference in
Lüneburg. Detailed information on how to apply and what conditions must be
fulfilled can be accessed under http://www.mced-ecology.org/?page_id=941 .

Please note, that for 2012 there is a short deadline: applications must be
mailed in by July 31th 2012 at the latest to [email protected]

best,
Fred Jopp, Hauke Reuter and Broder Breckling
