Staff Biologist for Laboratory and Field‐based Forest Canopy Research

We are looking for a highly motivated Biologist to join the Spectranomics
team of the Carnegie
Institution for Science, Department of Global Ecology (DGE) as a full time
staff member. The
Spectranomics project (http://spectranomics.ciw.edu) integrates vegetation
taxonomic,
chemical and spectral remote sensing approaches to map canopy function and
diversity
throughout tropical forests of the world. This project also provides the
fundamental scientific
data supporting the Carnegie Airborne Observatory (http://cao.ciw.edu)
biodiversity mapping
program.

The new Staff Biologist will be required to work in three areas: (i)
processing and analysis of
plant canopy samples for chemical traits using a state‐of‐the‐art
biochemistry facility located at
DGE; (ii) processing of canopy plant samples in remote field locations
throughout the tropics,
working closely with the Carnegie field teams; and (iii) managing the plant
sample archive in the
Spectranomics Frozen Forest cryogenic facility.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in environmental biology or a closely
related field
- Proficiency in laboratory research, with strong preference given to
individuals with
demonstrated chemical laboratory experience
- Experience and willingness to work in remote field stations, often for
several weeks to a
month at a time, with a supportive team of Carnegie ecologists and botanists
- Must speak Spanish and English
- Strong communication, collaboration and record‐keeping skills
