If you get a GPS receiver with an FRS/GMRS radio, and you wish to use GMRS, i.e., power > 0.5 W, you will need a GMRS license. A couple of years ago a GMRS license cost $85, available at your local FCC drive-thru licensing hut. If you're willing to limit your transmit power to 0.5 W, you can operate as an FRS radio without a license. Experiments in my suburban neighborhood show the range of an FRS radio to be 1/2 mile. Your mileage may vary. If you need radio communications in the field, you might also consider other bands in the Citizens Radio Service, either the traditional CB radios or MURS.

Thanks to all who helped with my question about computers.

Now I'd appreciate opinions and analysis regarding which model and features of
Toughbook I should go for, and which GPS units with which features are
considered best. For example, is the Garmin with the radio worth the extra
money?

THANKS again!
