The Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI,www.abmi.ca) invests
millions of dollars annually in environmental data collection. The ABMI
needs to analyze, interpret, and apply this environmental data to support
public policy and natural resource management. The ABMI's Applied Ecologist
works in ABMI's Science Centre and is responsible for analyzing data to
support environmental management throughout Alberta.
Duties
Analyzes biodiversity data collected by ABMI to estimate the occurrence
and abundance of numerous plant and animal species, including trends over
time; develops and uses new approaches
Analyzes relationships between species occurrence/abundance and human
development factors such as vegetation clearing
Produces papers in the scientific literature about the analysis of
biodiversity data; collaborates with academics and other members of the
science community
Supports the delivery of ABMI projects related to ecosystem services
assessment, climate change adaptation, design and evaluation of monitoring
designs for rare species, and assessment of biodiversity recovery after
reclamation of industrial footprints
Supports the creation and dissemination of reports and other information
products led by the ABMI Information Centre
Integrates ABMI data with information from other sources such as
government and industry monitoring data to complete the above tasks
Understands and addresses issues related to sampling design, statistical
distributions and software to undertake all of the above analyses
Organizes species, vegetation and habitat data for analyses
Evaluates multiple options for solving challenges and presents results
and recommendations to other ABMI staff, collaborators, and the broader
scientific community
Develops and reports quality control procedures for ABMI data, analyses
and modeling
Works with government and industry technical representatives to explore
the application of ABMI data and data products to planning, policy
development, and environmental resource management
Qualifications
PhD in ecology or related discipline preferred; equivalent combinations
of education and experience may be considered
Greater than 3 years working in the field of resource management
Experience working with research teams
Excellent interpersonal skills
Strong analytical ability and basic GIS ability
Experience modeling species response human disturbances, working in
Alberta ecosystems and with a broad diversity of taxa
Research experience in community ecology
Experience working on multidisciplinary team
