Job Description

This Research Biologist position will contribute to Klamath Bird Observatory’s 
mission to advance bird and habitat conservation through science, education, 
and partnerships; specifically contributing to avian long-term monitoring and 
applied ecology programs.  Involvement in effectiveness monitoring and adaptive 
management of the Trinity River Restoration Program will be a primary component 
of this position.  Job duties include grant writing, data management, data 
analysis, report and manuscript writing, community and scientific 
presentations, partnership building, study design and project management, 
supervising staff and interns, and field work as needed.


Job Duties

  *   Coordinates and manages field studies, including scheduling, data 
collection, data entry, data management, and program reporting
  *   Recruits and hires staff and interns as needed
  *   Provides for daily supervision, training, support, and coordination of 
staff and interns
  *   Performs data analysis for reports and manuscripts
  *   Produces manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  *   Responsible for grant writing and contract acquisition for scientific 
projects
  *   Assists in the development, design, and review of science projects
  *   Presents research findings at scientific conferences
  *   Markets science projects to partners and community
  *   Participates and holds leadership roles in local and regional 
professional networks
  *   Provides input and support for programmatic budgets, accounting, and 
billing
  *   Ensures timely delivery of project deliverables within the program
  *   Communicates Partners in Flight objectives and scientific findings to 
land managers
  *   Performs field work as needed
  *   Acquires and manages field station housing
  *   Performs management and maintenance of vehicles and equipment


Basic Qualifications

The Research Biologist must have a combination of education and experience 
equivalent to a Masters’s degree in the Natural Sciences and a minimum of two 
years of project management. The Research Biologist should have experience with 
avian monitoring techniques, data management, and willingness to work as a team 
member for a growing non-profit organization.  Qualifications include 
supervisory experience, excellent written and oral communication skills, data 
analysis, report and manuscript writing, grant writing, and public speaking.  
This position requires good physical condition and the ability to work in the 
field hiking over rough terrain.  Ability to work remotely for several days at 
a time during the breeding season (April – July) will be necessary, as well as 
occasional travel throughout the year.


Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  *   Knowledge of avian natural history and ecology
  *   Experience with avian monitoring methodology and research design
  *   Experience with statistical methods and analysis of avian data
  *   Experience with data management including Access databases
  *   Experience with ArcGIS
  *   Experience implementing avian field studies
  *   Experience in personnel management and supervision of field crews
  *   Ability to collect meticulous data
  *   Ability and positive attitude to work long days in the field
  *   Ability and positive attitude to hike in rough and steep terrain in 
inclement weather, in areas with poison oak, ticks, biting and stinging 
insects, rattlesnakes, black bears, and cougars
  *   Ability to develop, implement, track, and manage a budget
  *   Good oral and written communication skills, including public speaking and 
technical science writing and publication
  *   Ability to represent KBO to partners and the public, and within 
professional networks
  *   Good attention to detail and ability to multi-task in a busy work 
environment
  *   Must have good organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
  *   Ability to work with others, both internally and externally
  *   Must provide and maintain own transportation, a valid driver’s license, 
and meet minimum insurance requirements
