Forester GS-460-9 Manitou Experimental Forest Site Manager
(GS-9 annual salary range from $47,448 to $61,678)

The US Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station plans to advertise
for a permanent GS-460-9 Forester, with a duty station in Woodland Park,
Colorado. The Forester will serve as the Site Manager for Manitou
Experimental Forest (MEF), located near Woodland Park, CO. The Site Manager
assists in the collection, analysis, and reporting of research data and is
responsible for the maintenance of the facilities at MEF and its day-to-day
operations. The Site Manager is required to live on-site at the ‘Residence’,
built in 1935 by the Works Progress Administration. Current monthly rent
for the Residence is $1150 and includes all utilities and internet access.
See http://www.fs.usda.gov/main/manitou/about/site-facilities for a picture
of the ‘Residence’.

Research data collection, analysis and reporting will require 60% of the
position’s time.
The Forester will provide professional assistance to research scientists by
aiding in the planning, locating, installing, and conducting research
studies as well as collecting, editing, archiving, and analyzing research
data using statistical analyses (such as data reduction, analysis of
variance, multiple regression) and Geographic Information System software.
The Site Manager duties will require 40% of the position’s time. The Site
Manager is responsible for the maintenance of the facilities at MEF and its
day-to-day operations, including scheduling facility use, interacting with
the Pike Ranger District to coordinate land management activities, assisting
research, assisting in managing recreational use of the Experimental Forest
and interacting with the public. The position requires strong skills in
written and oral communications, computers, and interactions with people.
The position also requires light lifting and some manual labor, good
mechanical skills, working outside, and walking on rough terrain.

This is an exceptionally satisfying and challenging position for the right
person. The remoteness from supervision makes independent judgment and
action essential. The position requires many different skills from
collecting data, working with scientists, the Pike Ranger District, and the
public, and maintaining an historic and complicated physical plant.
However, deadlines are few and the position will have large discretion over
day-to-day activities. For more information on Manitou Experimental Forest,
please see: http://www.fs.usda.gov/manitou

The vacancy announcement for this position will be posted on the U.S.
Government’s official website for employment opportunities www.usajobs.gov.
