The Huyck Preserve in Rensselaerville, NY seeks an Executive Director (ED) 
who will ensure that the Preserve’s current vibrant programs and 
accomplishments will continue and grow. As the Preserve’s chief operating 
officer, the ED reports to the board of directors and the board’s executive 
committee and is primarily responsible for helping the Preserve to continue 
the successful fulfillment of its mission. The ED position is an exciting 
opportunity for a multi-tasker who will enjoy overseeing and working with a 
small, genial team on a variety of endeavors.

The Organization
The Huyck Preserve and Biological Research Station accomplishes its unique 
mission in four key areas: conservation, scientific research, education, and 
recreation.

The Huyck Preserve, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located on a 2000-
acre land preserve in the hill country southwest of Albany, NY, invites 
applications for the position of Executive Director.  The Preserve’s mission 
is to preserve the natural beauty of the Rensselaerville Falls, the 
watershed of Lake Myosotis and surrounding lands; to conduct long-term 
research on natural systems as part of a global effort to understand and 
protect the Earth’s biodiversity; and to increase appreciation of this 
effort through innovative, field-based educational programs for students, 
teachers, and the community.  

The Preserve’s educational programs and recreational opportunities play a 
vital role in the surrounding community, and its field station is one of the 
oldest independent biological field stations in the U.S., drawing

Executive Director Position
The Huyck Preserve seeks an Executive Director (ED) who will ensure that the 
Preserve’s current vibrant programs and accomplishments will continue and 
grow. As the Preserve’s chief operating officer, the ED reports to the board 
of directors and the board’s executive committee and is primarily 
responsible for helping the Preserve to continue the successful fulfillment 
of its mission. The ED position is an exciting opportunity for a multi-
tasker who will enjoy overseeing and working with a small, genial team on a 
variety of endeavors. 

The ED’s areas of responsibility include the following:
•       administrative and managerial oversight of the Preserve’s day-to-day 
operations and staff;
•       financial oversight of the Preserve’s expenditures and revenue to 
ensure it can accomplish its goals while staying within budget;
•       increasing development through
        fundraising activities and expanding membership and annual 
giving;
        grant writing, including proposals to private and corporate 
foundations; and
        marketing and community outreach.
•       oversight of the educational and research programs developed and 
administered by the director of conservation education and research;
•       oversight of conservation and stewardship, including compliance with 
Land Trust Alliance standards and practices;
•       oversight of the physical maintenance of the Preserve (including its 
trails, dams, and buildings) by working with the supervisor of the 
Preserve’s buildings and grounds;
•       oversight of the recreation programs;
•       participating in the life of the local community;
•       interfacing with government and other organizations; and
•       regularly reporting to and consulting with the Preserve’s board of 
directors and executive committee.

Qualifications and Skills
The ideal ED candidate will possess the following qualifications and skills:
•       a Master’s or higher degree in a field related to the Preserve’s 
goals and activities;
•       managerial or administrative work experience; 
•       experience in nonprofit management and grant writing and 
fundraising;
•       familiarity with and strong support of all areas of the Preserve’s 
mission: land conservation and stewardship, biological and environmental 
research, education, and fostering recreational enjoyment of the Preserve;
•       excellent organizational and record-keeping skills;
•       experience in preparing and adhering to budgets;
•       superior communications skills (including keeping the staff and 
board informed and interfacing with the community and governmental and 
private agencies); and
•       the ability to work independently and as a team player, who can both 
lead and delegate.
