Student Contractor Participation in Research on Effects of Macroalgal Blooms
on Estuarine Ecosystems

The Western Ecology Division of the US Environmental Protection Agency in
Newport, Oregon is seeking a student contractor to assist in research
pertaining to quantifying the effects of macroalgal blooms on Pacific
Northwest (PNW) estuarine ecosystem structure, function, and ecosystem
service production as part of the Safe and Sustainable Waters Research
Program (SSWR) and the Sustainable and Healthy Communities Research Program
(SHCRP). The student contractor shall assist with statistical analysis of
existing data sets from studies conducted at the EPA laboratory. Those
studies include field experiments to examine effects of macroalgal loading
on benthic invertebrate community structure, sediment chemistry, and
bioturbation rates; and studies on temporal variation in the spatial
distribution of macroalgae within estuaries. The student contractor will
also assist in developing metrics of the ecological effects of macroalgal
blooms to benthic communities. There also may be opportunities to
