The Association of Environmental Studies and Sciences
(AESS<http://aess.info/content.aspx?page_id=0&club_id=939971>) is pleased to
announce our 2013 Annual Meeting – co-hosted by Duquesne University and Chatham
University – on June 19-22, 2013 at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA.

A major aim of AESS is to encourage engagement with today’s socio-ecological
challenges by serving the needs of environmental scholars and scientists who
value interdisciplinary approaches to research, teaching, and problem-solving

our journal

The meetings provide an incredible opportunity to engage with a diverse range
of environmental scholars and practitioners through sessions, workshops,
receptions, and excellent plenary talks. AESS is particularly accessible to
young scholars and students, providing opportunities to network and grow.

Pittsburgh provides a compelling setting to explore this year’s theme: Linking
Rural and Urban Societies and Ecologies:

As we think of ways to bridge the rural/urban divide, we are fortunate to have
a venue that showcases this theme very well. Pittsburgh is a post-industrial
city that has reinvented itself through higher learning institutions and the
health care industry. However, the urban center is embedded in the vast rural
region of Northern Appalachia, with legacies of agriculture, tourism, resource
extraction, and manufacturing. There will be several field trips that explore
these socio-environmental histories (e.g. urban farms, mining legacies, the
Cultural District, and the Strip District). Conference participants will have
ample opportunities to explore one of the most livable cities in the U.S.
