Ecologgers,
Here are some of the responses to my vertical farming techniques inquiry, as requested. Thank you all for your valuable input! Mahogany Bullock [email protected] ____________________________________________________________________________ ________ Hi, I have a friend who just got involved in a vertical farming program and I've seen this systems great productivity. Here is the site and I am sure you can contact these guys if you have any questions. The second site has a video and is more about their fundraising. http://www.brightagrotech.com/ http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/569973520/grow-up-vertical-farming-for-e veryone?fb_action_ids=10103624870442464 <http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/569973520/grow-up-vertical-farming-for- everyone?fb_action_ids=10103624870442464&fb_action_types=og.likes&fb_source= timeline_og&action_object_map=%7b%2210103624870442464%22%3A229980747132935%7 d&action_type_map=%7b%2210103624870442464%22%3A%22og.likes%22%7d&action_ref_ map=%5b%5d> &fb_action_types=og.likes&fb_source=timeline_og&action_object_map={%22101036 24870442464%22%3A229980747132935}&action_type_map={%2210103624870442464%22%3 A%22og.likes%22}&action_ref_map=[] ____________________________________________________________________________ __________ Hello, I would be very interested to learn more about your project! One of my current research interests is insects as a sustainable food source, and I think they are extremely applicable to urban/vertical farming. Thanks! ____________________________________________________________________________ __________ So technically speaking--and perhaps you know this--a hydroponic system cannot be organic due to the lack of soil medium. The vertical farms I have seen hold plants in holes cut out of polystyrene. The system I am most familiar with is a paired hydoponic/aquaponic system (tilapia and lettuce/herbs) in a warehouse space in Minnesota (cold climate - but controlled because operates indoors). See http://gardenfreshfarms.com/growning-systems/ I would update your request for information by specifying if you plan on farming indoors or outdoors, since it makes a large difference. Also, it would be helpful to specify which crops you want to grow, since many systems are soil-less, this isn't enough information to go on. In my estimation, there is much room for innovation within vertical farming! It's an exciting field. Good luck!
