Assistant Professor of Forest Ecosystem Ecology
University of Alaska Southeast
Juneau, Alaska

The Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Alaska Southeast
(UAS) invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor
of Forest Ecosystem Ecology, with a focus on the dynamics, processes and
interactions in forested ecosystems.

Candidates who can address aspects of applied forestry and/or forest
management in their research and teaching are preferred. The position will
support undergraduate degree programs in Environmental Science, Geography,
and Biology. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate level courses
in the forest-ecosystem sciences, plant ecology, and/or natural resource
management as well as upper division courses and seminars in the
candidate's area of expertise.

Candidates should have prior research experience and the capacity to
establish a program of externally funded research, with an expectation
that they will involve undergraduate students in their research. The
successful candidate will be involved in EPSCoR research activities at UAS
focused on evaluating the physical and biological function and ecosystem
services associated with the coastal temperate rainforests of southeast
Alaska. Also, the successful candidate is expected to work
collaboratively across disciplines within the Department of Natural
Sciences. Opportunities exist to engage with regional organizations such
as the Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center (http://acrc.alaska.edu) and the
U.S. Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station
(http://www.fs.fed.us/pnw/) that complements the successful candidate's
research program.

Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in a closely related field by the date of
appointment to the position.

UAS is located 12 miles north of downtown Juneau, in a beautiful setting
overlooking Auke Lake and Mendenhall Glacier. Juneau (population 32,000),
the capital of Alaska, is a picturesque city with a mild, maritime
climate, exceptional outdoor and recreation values, and a lively arts
community. The University is undergraduate focused but has opportunities
for graduate studies through affiliate campuses including the University
of Alaska Fairbanks. Approximately 750 full-time and 2,000 part-time
students take coursework from the Juneau campus in day time and evening
courses, as well as incoming/outgoing distance delivery offerings to
locations in rural Alaska.
