Hello, Ecologgers! The Marine Conservation Institute has written a letter encouraging the European Union (home of one of the world's largest deep-sea fishing fleets) to phase out bottom trawling and bottom gillnetting. Both fishing techniques have high rates of bycatch, and trawling damages the substrate itself.
MCI is seeking scientists to sign the letter. Background information, the full text of the letter, and instructions on how to sign can be found at this blog post: http://www.southernfriedscience.com/?p=14242 Please note that commenting on the blog post is not the same thing as signing the petition. Please share with interested colleagues. I'm happy to answer any questions that anyone has. Thanks for your help!
