We are seeking a motivated volunteer looking to gain valuable field experience in sampling a range of marsh and birds along the South Carolina coast. The technician will be assisting with an M.S. project focused on understanding the vulnerability of marsh birds to climate change. Desired availability: March/April (Fridays-Mondays) May- August (at least 5x/week). Ideal candidate will be able to participate in a coastal field training March 14/15-18.
Last date to apply: March 8th 2013, or until a suitable candidate is found. Duties include: surveying marshlands and sighting marsh birds including by sound, nest searching and monitoring shorebird and marsh bird populations, assist with photography and film throughout the field season and some potential vegetation and water quality analysis. Fieldwork will be conducted beginning end of March- April on Fridays-Mondays and beginning of May at least 5x a week through August (specific end date flexible). Office duties may include data entry, maintenance of field gear and other travel preparations. Qualifications: The ideal applicant will have some interest in ecological field research and conservation. Applicants should be motivated and have the ability to work independently as well as with others, comfortable on boats and open water, the ability to navigate using a GPS, an interest/previous experience with coastal marsh birds or climate change and a good sense of humor.
