IFREMER (French Institute for the Research and Exploitation of the Sea, staff: 1400 employees based in various locations in France and overseas) is seeking applicants at the 'Fishery Technology and Biology laboratory' in Lorient, Brittany (part of the research unit 'Fishery science and Technology') for a full-time permanent position of Fishery Scientist.
Within the research unit, you will contribute to develop Ifremer research ability in the field of interactions between fishing gears and marine ecosystems, in the framework of Ecosystem Approach of Fisheries. You will take part into research projects about ecological and economical fisheries sustainability. The position is about : - Assessment and mitigation of environmental footprint of various fishing techniques on marine habitats and living resources within them (e.g. : physical impact on seabed, resuspension of sediments, fishing gears selectivity, biodiversity changes…). - Reduction of energy costs of fishing. - Investigation of performances of alternative fishing techniques to trawling gears. - Improving sample gears used for scientific surveys at sea. - Experiments at sea or using flume tank. Required skills: - PhD in fishery science or marine ecology. - Field experience in fishery sciences (experiments, fishing gears, boarding at sea). Specific knowledge : - Good knowledge in data processing tools and programming language - Mathematical Modelling, data analysis and statistics, - Good written and oral skills (including in English). - Ability to work with minimum guidance and as part of a member of an interdisciplinary team.
