PROGRAMME: Marine Invasions & Diseases Course

Non-credit programme for undergraduate, graduate, and gap year students; international research/field station staff; K-12 educators; and scuba instructors and divemasters

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Participants will

· Identify hard and soft coral diseases, coral bleaching, competitive and invasive species

· Learn scientific field methods, including coral reef health surveys

· Attend evening discussions on Marine Invasions and Diseases issues such as lionfish and other invasive species, epizootic and mass mortality events, harmful algal blooms

· Develop an independent research project under the guidance of experienced scientists

Participants will showcase their work at the end of the programme by presenting

· Conference-quality scientific poster and abstract (for international research/field station staff and for undergrad, grad, and gap year students)

· Lesson plan that incorporates the learning outcomes from the internship (for K-12 educators)

· Outreach presentation suitable for tourists and the recreational dive/snorkel community (for dive instructors and divemasters)

APPLICATION TIMETABLE

Applications should be received no later than April 30, but early registration is preferred. Registration is limited to 15 participants. Applicants will be notified regarding their acceptance decision by May 15.

COST OF THE PROGRAMME

$1600 (US) for the 8-day programme which includes dormitory-style accommodations, buffet-style meals (B, L, D), on-island transfers between airport and research station, research costs and all field activities including snorkelling, diving for certified divers, and boat trips.

Excluded from the Programme Costs are (i) roundtrip airfare to/from Little Cayman; (ii) DAN Preferred Insurance for all scuba divers; (iii) travel insurance for non-divers (optional, but highly recommended due to the remoteness of the island); and (iv) rental gear, if needed, for scuba divers.

MAXIMUM ENROLMENT

15 students, but qualified candidates may be wait-listed in case additional spots open
