*Internship in Environmental Science Education Resource Development in
Berkeley, CA *

*DESCRIPTION*

The National Center for Science Education (NCSE), located in Oakland, is
currently working with UC Museum of Paleontology (UCMP) at Berkeley to
develop a resource for science educators on Global Change. Working with
scientists and teachers from across the country, we are creating a vetted
and scientifically sound resource, building off of the success of two
previous web resources, Understanding Evolution and Understanding Science.
Students working as interns on this project would be involved with
research, resource development, some writing and alignment with national
education standards.

Students would work closely with NCSE staff to receive training in how to:
* research scientific questions, and translate complex ideas into
educational material for teachers and students.
* research national science standards, and how to align educational
resources with those standards.
* work with and receive feedback from scientists and teachers from across
the country to develop an educational resource.
* research, interpret and write scientific concepts for an education
audience.
* evaluate educational resources for scientific and pedagogical quality.

This is an ideal internship for students who are interested in a future in
science/environmental education, public outreach in the sciences,
curriculum development and science writing. Though the internship will be
through NCSE and managed by NCSE staff, the intern would meet with NCSE
mentors at the UCMP offices on UC Berkeley’s campus.

*QUALIFICATIONS*

* Must have a basic understanding of environmental/ecological sciences and
global change issues.
* Good writing skills are a must.
* Interest in learning how scientific material is translated into
educational material for teachers and students.
* Must understand (or be willing to learn) how to research scientific
questions using journal search engines and other library resources.
* Undergraduate student in the sciences or education preferred.

* *

Students interested in receiving University credit, must seek out an
adviser and work with their host University to gain credit. We are willing
to work with interns to provide necessary documentation for that credit.
This is an unpaid internship 10 hrs/week for at least 8 weeks.

Start date: June 4th, 2013, end date is flexible.

*TO APPLY:*

Interested students should e-mail a resume, cover letter and a short
