The Faculty of Agriculture and Environment seeks
to make an appointment in the area of
Agronomy/Plant-Soil Interactions located at the
IA Watson Grains Research Centre,
Narrabri. Recent infrastructure investment at
the IA Watson Centre by the University and the
Wheat Research Foundation (WRF) has been followed
by investment from the Grains Research and
Development Corporation (GRDC) in a refreshed
research program. The IA Watson Centre also hosts
considerable staff and research activity for
major breeding companies and is set for further
development as a point of delivery of research for the northern grains region.
Strong candidates will have a background relevant
to one or more issues such as: plant nutrition,
plant diseases (e.g. crown rot and root lesion
nematodes in cereals), plant water relations.
Similarly, you will be able to demonstrate how
management can be used to modify plant-soil
relationships such that productivity is enhanced.
Particular skills in any of a number of fields
would be advantageous such as skills in:
molecular techniques for functional
characterization of microbial communities,
quantifying soil physical properties, or in plant
root-soil nutrient interactions.
We are seeking to significantly enhance research
on plant-soil interactions at the Universitys IA
Watson Grains Research Centre at Narrabri, NSW.
This position is funded by the GRDC for the first
five years. You will have significant
opportunities to work with the WRF and other
industry stakeholders and develop further
projects for consideration by the GRDC through their established processes.
You will undertake research as described above,
and will interact with current research teams in
the faculty. You will be expected to develop new
teaching for undergraduate students, supervise
research projects at honours and postgraduate
levels, and help develop workshops, seminars and
master-classes for industry stakeholders,
especially growers. You will serve the facultys
interests in developing its international and national profile.
To succeed in this role, you will have:
· a PhD degree or equivalent in a relevant field
· demonstrated research capability in plant-soil interactions
· a significant publication record
· ability to attract competitive research funding
· strong desire to interact and conduct
research with relevant industry stakeholders
· demonstrated teaching and communication skills
· a valid drivers licence (as driving in
remote rural areas is required)
Desirable selection criteria include: experience
of working with industry and a teaching portfolio.
The faculty has established strengths in
modelling, soil science, plant pathology, plant
breeding (including legumes), precision
agriculture, spatial information systems and
agricultural and resource economics. You will
support cognate research in areas such as carbon
sequestration in soils, providing relevant
expertise in soil-plant-water relations and will
develop appropriate units of study.
The position is full time continuing subject to
the completion of a satisfactory probation and
confirmation period. Visa sponsorship and some
relocation expenses support will be available if required.
Remuneration package: up to $125K p.a.
(consisting of a base salary level B, leave
loading and 17% employers contribution to
superannuation). Level of appointment will be
commensurate with experience and qualifications.
