The Faculty of Agriculture and Environment seeks to make an appointment in the area of Agronomy/Plant-Soil Interactions located at the IA Watson Grains Research Centre, Narrabri. Recent infrastructure investment at the IA Watson Centre by the University and the Wheat Research Foundation (WRF) has been followed by investment from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) in a refreshed research program. The IA Watson Centre also hosts considerable staff and research activity for major breeding companies and is set for further development as a point of delivery of research for the northern grains region.

Strong candidates will have a background relevant to one or more issues such as: plant nutrition, plant diseases (e.g. crown rot and root lesion nematodes in cereals), plant water relations. Similarly, you will be able to demonstrate how management can be used to modify plant-soil relationships such that productivity is enhanced. Particular skills in any of a number of fields would be advantageous such as skills in: molecular techniques for functional characterization of microbial communities, quantifying soil physical properties, or in plant root-soil nutrient interactions.

We are seeking to significantly enhance research on plant-soil interactions at the University’s IA Watson Grains Research Centre at Narrabri, NSW. This position is funded by the GRDC for the first five years. You will have significant opportunities to work with the WRF and other industry stakeholders and develop further projects for consideration by the GRDC through their established processes.

You will undertake research as described above, and will interact with current research teams in the faculty. You will be expected to develop new teaching for undergraduate students, supervise research projects at honours and postgraduate levels, and help develop workshops, seminars and master-classes for industry stakeholders, especially growers. You will serve the faculty’s interests in developing its international and national profile.

To succeed in this role, you will have:
· a PhD degree or equivalent in a relevant field
· demonstrated research capability in plant-soil interactions
· a significant publication record
· ability to attract competitive research funding
· strong desire to interact and conduct research with relevant industry stakeholders
· demonstrated teaching and communication skills
· a valid driver’s licence (as driving in remote rural areas is required)

Desirable selection criteria include: experience of working with industry and a teaching portfolio.

The faculty has established strengths in modelling, soil science, plant pathology, plant breeding (including legumes), precision agriculture, spatial information systems and agricultural and resource economics. You will support cognate research in areas such as carbon sequestration in soils, providing relevant expertise in soil-plant-water relations and will develop appropriate units of study.

The position is full time continuing subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation and confirmation period. Visa sponsorship and some relocation expenses support will be available if required.

Remuneration package: up to $125K p.a. (consisting of a base salary level B, leave loading and 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation). Level of appointment will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
