THESE ARE TEMPORARY EXCEPTED SERVICES POSITIONS for which all qualified
applicants, with or without Federal status, may apply and be considered.
Appointment to these positions, however, will not convey permanent status
in the Federal service. Appointment will only be for the duration of the
position, normally 3-6 months. Temporary employees are covered by the
Social Security Retirement System and annual and sick leave will be
accrued except in intermittent status. Employees are ineligible for
health and life insurance coverage.
DUTIES:
Incumbent performs technical work in a laboratory or field environment in
support of professional
or technical employees engaged in data collection activities or analysis
of biological data collection
activities or analysis of biological samples. Performs one or more of the
following duties:
• Radiotracks, captures, marks, and measures turtles and tortoises
• Assists with field X-radiography of turtles and tortoises
• Collects biological or wildlife data from study files or field
sites.
• Performs laboratory analysis of biological data to determine
biological or physical characteristics.
• Operates a government motor vehicle as an incidental driver.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Work is physically demanding and includes walking, bending, climbing, and
lifting of equipment up to 100 pounds when in the field, sometimes during
adverse conditions. Field conditions may include working in hot, dry,
mountainous desert terrain and occasionally cold desert streams.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To qualify for a GG-0404-04 you must have at least 6 months field survey
party experience or 2 years sub-professional experience, or 1 year of
college work related to the field of employment.
ELIGIBILITY:
Current students in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year
colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges);
professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree
programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a
qualifying degree or certificate.
BASIS OF EVALUATION:
All applicants will be evaluated on the basis of education and experience
(including unpaid or volunteer experience). Applicants must meet all
qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of this
announcement.
First preference in referral will be given to eligible applicants entitled
to 10 point veteran’s preference who have a compensable service-connected
disability of 10 percent or more. All other qualified applicants entitled
to veteran’s preference will be given preference over qualified applicants
not entitled to veteran’s preference.

United States Geological Survey, unless legally qualified for an
