The James Lab in Spatial Ecology at the Université de Montréal is now
accepting applications for multiple graduate student positions (Ph.D.
and M.Sc). Research in the lab focuses on the landscape-scale
interactions among forest patterns and disturbance processes such as
fire, outbreaks of economically important forest insect species, and
forest management. Using field studies, simulation modelling, and
molecular approaches we address ecological questions to improve our
understanding of the causes and consequences of forest spatial
heterogeneity and its effects on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.
Current funded projects address the influence of forest landscape
structure on insect dispersal, gene flow, parasitism, and trophic
interactions using the eastern spruce budworm (/Choristoneura
fumiferana/) as a study system.
Students with background in two or more of the following areas are
desired: forest ecology, entomology, molecular biology / population
genetics, geographic information systems (GIS), statistics, simulation
modelling. Strong verbal, written, and analytical skills are essential
as well as an excellent academic record. Expected start date is
September 2013, but applications will be accepted until all positions
have been filled.
