The certificate program requires the completion of 6 seminars in one of these fields at Eagle Hill over a number of summers, and a field research project in collaboration with one of the Eagle Hill instructors. Those completing the Certificate Program have the option of preparing a co-authored manuscript from their research project, which can be submitted to one of the Institute's two scientific journals, the Northeastern Naturalist or Southeastern Naturalist. These Certificate Programs serve as a resumé-building opportunity for practicing field biologists, and as an intensive curriculum enhancement opportunity for students whose institutions offer a graduate or undergraduate degree in the natural history sciences, but whose regular course offerings do not include specialized seminars or publishing opportunities such as those offered at Eagle Hill.
