Great work and intriguing ideas as usual, Sam.

Though you're not looking for vertebrates now, imagine a future where one could
record a wolf howl, add the howl's date, time and location to a database — AND
identify what individual(s) you are hearing.

Wolf howl identification technology excites experts:

Subject: [ECOLOG-L] Using cell phone recordings to create an atlas of Calling
North American Insects

All:

Much of what we know of cricket, katydid, and cicada distributions and
status comes from the great collectors of the previous century. Mass
collecting is largely a thing of the past for these groups, but there is a
need to keep tabs on their current populations as our climate and habitats
change.

In keeping with the digital naturalist world digital recordings permit
accurate identification of many species in this group.

Smartphones now have good quality built in mics

So, using a new feature of iNaturalist, we have started a Calling Insect
Atlas for North America.

The idea is simple. Diurnal and Nocturnal insects (no vertebrates please)
are recorded using your cell phone and uploaded to iNaturalist. That
recording becomes a sound "specimen" and you can put an id on it or not,
but it becomes available to anyone to listen to and they can make a
suggested correction to the id.

We have added a few recordings already at:

http://www.inaturalist.org/projects/atlas-of-north-american-calling-insects-pilot

But will be moving into full swing soon (at least I will).

Anyone can participate (good project for those park and refuge volunteers)
they just need a smart phone and the ability to hear an insect and point
their cell phone at it.

While there are instructions on iNaturalist on how to set up the system, I
can send you a file that steps you through the process.

Note that using an app from SoundCloud you can record and then immediately
upload your recordings to your SoundCloud account.

No excuses.

Happy insect! what can be
In happiness compared to thee?
Fed with nourishment divine,
They dewy morning's gentle wine,
Nature waits upon thee still,
And thy verdant cup does fill;
'Tis filled wherever thou dost tread,
Nature's self thy Ganymede
