Ecolog,

Thanks to all who have responded to my request for information on satellite
phones in Alaska. I have received 14 responses, and here is a summary:

   - 12 users in Alaska, 1 in Montana, 1 in Iraq and Afghanistan
   - All users reported favorably on Iridium brand phones. Two users
reported troubles with Global Star, and no favorable comments were reported
for non-Iridium phones. The consensus is that Iridium works well and has
the best technology, so don't risk your communication with another
   manufacture.
   - Respondents said that Iridium phones were mostly reliable, but that
reception can be blocked by steep topography or dense forests, and that
walking to an opening or slightly different location can help. Several
people mentioned that in remote and potentially dangerous locations they
would not consider leaving port or base with out an Iridium phone.
