Dear Ecolog-Listers: Yesterday, as I was teaching an environmental sciences course, I came across a negative doubling time. My gut reaction was that, while, of course, the population is not increasing (let alone doubling), the arithmetic solution represented the halving time, if the population continues "growing" at that rate.
