TENURE-TRACK POSITION IN FISHERIES MANAGEMENT
Job Title: Assistant Professor of Fisheries Management
School: Biological Sciences
Job Summary/Basic Function: Lake Superior State University seeks
qualified applicants for a 9 month tenure-track faculty position in
Fisheries Management. The preferred start date is August 2014.
Responsibilities include teaching core courses (Fisheries Management,
Fish Ecology, Ichthyology, and Freshwater Fish Culture) in the
Fisheries and Wildlife Management degree program and co-directing the
LSSU Aquatic Research Laboratory (ARL;
<http://www.lssu.edu/arl>www.lssu.edu/arl). These courses are upper
level and enrollment for each is generally fewer than 30 students.
The ARL assignment includes co-oversight of staff and budget, a
coldwater fish hatchery, and enhancement and coordination of
fundraising, outreach, and research programs.
LSSU is a small (<3000 undergraduate students) state university
located in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The campus sits
on the St. Marys River, the sole outflow of Lake Superior, and
provides numerous professional opportunities in fisheries research,
including collaborations with state/provincial and federal US and
Canadian agencies. Additionally, LSSU is surrounded by three Great
Lakes and many state, provincial, and national forests and parks that
provide tremendous recreational opportunities.
The School of Biological Sciences (SBS) and the Aquatic Research
Laboratory provide exceptional lab space and equipment for fisheries
and aquatic science education and research. Boats, trucks, and a
range of well-maintained fisheries sampling gear is available at the
ARL for student and faculty research and teaching. The fisheries
management faculty also will have a teaching/research lab, which
houses a Great Lakes fish collection.
The SBS encourages high faculty-student interaction through student
research and active student organizations. SBS students are required
to complete senior thesis research and they are encouraged to present
their research at regional and national scientific conferences.
Faculty also work closely in advising student clubs, including the
nationally recognized Fisheries and Wildlife Club (student sub-unit
of the American Fisheries Society).
Minimum Qualifications: Doctoral degree in Fisheries Management or
closely related discipline is required at the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications: The successful applicant will have a strong
commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and advising, an
interest in including undergraduates in fisheries management and
culture research and in creating professional opportunities for
students outside of class. The successful candidate also should have
an interest in collaborating with other faculty and resource
management agencies. LSSU's Fisheries and Wildlife program has a
strong history of working closely with state and federal agencies, as
well as local sportsmen's clubs, on inland lake and Great Lakes
fisheries management and fish culture, and we seek a candidate with
similar experience that would continue this success.
