Assistant Professor of Environmental Remediation and Ecosystem Restoration 
 
About the Position: The Department of Environmental Sciences in Huxley 
College of the Environment at Western Washington University (WWU) in 
Bellingham, WA invites applications for a tenure-track position in 
Environmental Remediation and Ecosystem Restoration at the rank of 
Assistant Professor, to begin in September 2014. Primary teaching and 
research activities for this position will be located at satellite sites 
in Port Angeles, Poulsbo, and Everett Washington, as part of the Huxley 
College on the Peninsulas program. This is a new position and is part of a 
larger initiative by WWU to expand its contribution to higher education in 
western Washington. The Environmental Sciences Department and Huxley 
College on the Peninsulas strive to further WWU’s identity as an

About the Department: Huxley College of the Environment addresses today's 
environmental issues and prepares tomorrow's interdisciplinary problem 
solvers. Huxley's integrative approach is designed to train students for 
creative, fulfilling professional careers in a changing world. Since its 
establishment in 1968, Huxley College has won national and international 
recognition for undergraduate and graduate programs that are continually 
refined to enhance practical, collaborative approaches to solving 
environmental problems.   

Since 1993, the Huxley College on the Peninsulas program has served the 
Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas, a region of Washington State with 
historically limited opportunities for higher education. The Peninsulas 
program provides access to quality undergraduate instruction for 50 – 60 
students annually, many of whom are non-traditional. Traditional classroom 
interactions are combined with distance learning approaches. Degrees 
offered through the Peninsulas program include a B.S. in Environmental 
Science and a B.A. in Environmental Policy. There are also opportunities 
to mentor M.S. students in the Environmental Science Department from the 
Bellingham campus. The program’s location offers access to coastal, 
freshwater, forest and alpine ecosystems in a growing region with many 
opportunities for applied research and experiential education. Program 
faculty and students have collaborated with government, tribal and private 
agencies on a range of local and regional remediation and restoration 
projects, including the ongoing Elwha River dam removals, the largest dam 
removal project ever undertaken in the United States.  

Position Responsibilities: 
Key responsibilities associated with this position will include:
Teaching undergraduate level courses in environmental monitoring and 
remediation or ecosystems restoration at Huxley College on the Peninsulas 
program sites
Developing distance learning activities in support of the Peninsulas 
program
Advising and mentoring undergraduate students at Peninsulas program sites
Developing a sustained program of externally funded research and 
scholarship
Service to the university, profession, and community through appropriate 
activities  
 
Required Qualifications: 
Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or a related 
field at time of application
Demonstrated ability for high-quality, original and collaborative research 
in environmental remediation or ecosystems restoration or a related 
discipline
Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate courses in environmental 
remediation or ecosystems restoration 
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
Research interests that involve questions related to remediation and 
monitoring of contaminated sites or ecological restoration in coastal, 
marine or freshwater ecosystems impacted by anthropogenic disturbances
Demonstrated experience in building a research program
Demonstrated experience with or commitment to outstanding undergraduate 
teaching that includes experiential learning
Demonstrated experience collaborating with environmental resource managers 
and other related professionals
Ability to work effectively with a diverse community of students and 
colleagues
