The Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture at the University of Maryland College Park is offering two tenure track positions in plant ecology. The two positions described below are in addition to a tenure track Assistant Professor-level position for a Sustainable Agroecosystems Entomologist that is currently advertised through the Department of Entomology (https://ejobs.umd.edu/postings/22741).

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR: LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT/URBAN ECOLOGY
Tenure Track Faculty – 9 Month Appointment (100% Teaching)
Position Number: 103650 (https://ejobs.umd.edu/postings/22930)

The Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at University of Maryland, College Park, seeks an Assistant Professor in Landscape Management/Urban Ecology with a focus in plant ecology of urban landscapes. The position is allied with the Department’s Landscape Management Program and will provide leadership to the land care industry within the rapidly developing, environmentally-sensitive Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

The incumbent will be a collaborative individual who has extensive training in the ecology or management of urban plant communities and broad knowledge of landscape construction and management practices. This individual should be an enthusiastic liaison to organizations and governmental agencies that have regulatory or advisory responsibilities to the land care industry. Research interests should address both basic and applied aspects of land care management. Potential areas of research emphasis might include quantitative aspects of energy flow in managed urban landscapes, characterization of biological and physical processes within urban landscapes, best management practices for plant establishment and sustainability, biological systems for storm water management, and cost benefit analysis of plant communities subjected to interventionist management practices including ecosystem services. Faculty members are expected to serve the professional community through review of publications and participation on competitive grant panels, in national and international professional meetings, and other activities. It is also expected that this individual will participate in other duties and committees as required by the department, college, and university; and interact with organizations representing their field in the state and region.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR: AGRICULTURAL ECOLOGY
Tenure Track Faculty – 9 Month Appointment (50% Research/50% Teaching)
Position Number: 106164 (https://ejobs.umd.edu/postings/22826)

The Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at University of Maryland, College Park, seeks an Assistant Professor in Plant Ecology primarily related to sustainability of agricultural systems. Based at the flagship campus of the University System of Maryland, this position will provide research leadership in a mixed urban-suburban-agricultural state that is located in the heart of the environmentally-sensitive Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

We seek a collaborative individual who is broadly trained in ecology with abilities to integrate their research with the needs of the agricultural and conservation communities to support sustainable agricultural practices. This individual should be enthusiastic about interacting with field faculty, agri-businesses, environmental constituencies, non-governmental organizations, and governmental agencies. Research interests could include interactive effects of changes in land use or climate on agricultural and natural environments, ecological strategies for sustainable agriculture, ecosystem dynamics including nutrient cycling, relations between crop and non-crop species, or biology and management of newly emerging pests. Candidates addressing questions across a range of spatial and temporal scales that link across major ecological disciplines are particularly sought.

THE CAMPUS

The University of Maryland, College Park, MD, is a Land Grant institution with world class research and Extension components located in suburban Washington, DC. The 1300-acre campus has outstanding research libraries and Metrorail access to national and international research institutions, government agency and non-governmental organization headquarters, and significant cultural landmarks. There are excellent opportunities for collaboration with across departments and colleges on campus. Further, proximity to Washington D.C., Baltimore, Annapolis, and Maryland’s Biotechnology Corridor offers opportunities for interaction with a range of nearby agencies and research institutions including USDA, Smithsonian Institution, EPA, NPS, and NSF. The NSF-sponsored Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center associated with campus provides potential and resources for collaborative synthetic research integrating social and environmental science. Access to nearby field sites is unparalleled due to our location near myriad juxtaposed land uses as well as to the 6,600 acres USDA Beltsville Agricultural Research Center and four University of Maryland Research and Education Centers located in different ecological provinces. State of the Art Greenhouse and growth chamber facilities provide opportunities for controlled-environment studies. Laboratory instrumentation provides for traditional and next generation DNA sequencing, chromatography, spectrophotometry, elemental analysis, tissue culture, x-ray diffraction and fluorescence, and other procedures.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a statement addressing current and future research interests, a statement of teaching interests, and names and contact information for three references specifying their relationships to applicant. Electronic submission of application through the University's web page is required (see links for each position above).

Applications submitted by November 30, 2013 will receive best consideration.
