Plymouth State University (PSU), Plymouth, NH, is inviting applications for
its MS program in Environmental Science and Policy (ESP). The MS in ESP is
coordinated by PSU’s Department of ESP, College of Graduate Studies (COGS),
and the Center for the Environment (CFE). Students will have opportunities
to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of faculty, students, and
scientists from other academic, governmental, and non-governmental
organizations such as the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, White Mountains
National Forest, and NH Department of Environmental Services.
Students accepted to PSU’s MS in ESP may be eligible for graduate research
assistantships (GRA).

For academic year 2014-15, we anticipate GRAs in the following areas:

1. One assistantship associated with a high temporal and spatial resolution
water electrical conductance and temperature sensing network
(go.plymouth.edu/lovotecs), which is part of the larger Ecosystems and
Society project in New Hampshire
(http://www.epscor.unh.edu/ecosystemsandsociety). This opportunity is for a
student with excellent quantitative skills, and an interest in developing
and analyzing large in situ sensed hydrologic data. Please contact Mark
Green ([email protected]) before applying for this position and to seek
more information about the project.

2. One assistantship to work on a social science and policy project in the
Gulf of Maine. We are looking for a student with an understanding of both
environmental science and policy and interest in working with stakeholders
to join a new National Science Foundation collaborative project between the
States of Maine and New Hampshire. More information can be found at
http://nhepscor.org/NEST. The student will be working with other researchers
in both states as well as local, community stakeholders around the social
science issues relevant to the closure of shellfish beds and beach
advisories. Please contact Dr. Shannon Rogers ([email protected])
before applying for this position and to seek more information about the
project.

3. One assistantship for environmental science work in the Squam Lakes
watershed in NH. This position is part of a unique partnership between CFE
and the Squam Lakes Association (SLA). The student will lead the Squam
Conservation Intern Program and also complete a research project that
addresses a research question developed in collaboration with CFE and the
SLA. For more information about this position, contact June Hammond Rowan
([email protected]) before applying.

4. Two GRAs may be available through CFE and the Department of ESP in the
areas of hydrology, environmental social sciences, ecosystem services,
climate change, ecological economics, limnogeology, or a combination of
those topics. Students receiving assistantships will conduct field sampling,
analytical, and/or theoretical work on projects related to our mission. For
more information about this position, contact Joseph Boyer
([email protected]) before applying.

All GRAs are for students accepted into the MS program in Environmental
Science and Policy and provide an excellent opportunity to work with a
broader cohort of students and their mentors. GRAs typically provide a
stipend of $8-15K and up to 15 credits of tuition per year.
Applications to the MS in ESP are submitted to PSU’s College of Graduate
Studies. To be considered for a GRA for students in the MS in ESP, please
submit a statement of interest and a current resume/CV to Betsy Ayotte
([email protected]). The priority deadline for applications is January
15, 2014. For more information about the MS in ESP, please contact June
Hammond Rowan ([email protected]), MS ESP Program Coordinator and
Associate Director of CFE.
