Salary Range: $4,393 - $6,261 per month/$52,717 - $75,136 per year

This is a permanent, full-time position that is associated with the Washington 
state Forest Practices Adaptive Management Program and will participate in a 
team-oriented research and monitoring program with a focus on evaluating the 
effectiveness of Washington state forest practices rules and regulations 
applicable to forested wetlands and riparian areas.
This position will be employed by and located - along with three other 
Cooperative Monitoring, Evaluation, and Research Committee (CMER) scientists - 
at the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission in Olympia, Washington. (For more

Examples of research and monitoring areas likely to be addressed by this 
position include:

*            Evaluating the effectiveness of forest wetland buffers on wetland 
functions;
*            Studying the effects of forest practices on wetland/stream water 
temperature interactions;
*            Hydrologic connectivity linking wetlands to streams;
*            Evaluating the effectiveness of road construction and maintenance 
BMPs when filling or draining wetlands.

The successful candidate will perform a variety of duties including but not 
limited to:

*            Developing research and monitoring study designs;
*            Conducting literature reviews and syntheses;
*            Implementing field studies;
*            Analyzing research data;
*            Writing peer-reviewable technical reports in a team-oriented 
environment.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

*            At least a Master's degree with a major study in a natural 
resource science or closely related field (e.g., biology, ecology, 
environmental science, hydrology, geomorphology, forestry, wetland science)
*            Three years professional research work experience in wetlands 
related research and monitoring or closely related field relying on the 
required knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.

(A PhD degree will substitute for the required experience provided the field of 
major study was in a natural resource science or closely related field that 
emphasized principles applicable to forest wetlands research and monitoring.)

*            Knowledge and understanding of ecology, botany, hydrology, 
geology, and wetland science, including wetland and riparian ecology, wetland 
hydrology, wetland delineation/evaluation/classification, soils and other 
closely related areas
*            Advanced working knowledge of statistics, including experimental 
designs, sampling procedures, error assessment methods, data analysis 
procedures, and parametric and non-parametric statistical techniques
*            Ability to use and adapt GIS technologies, including mapping and 
querying
*            Demonstrated ability and experience in designing, planning, 
organizing, and implementing field studies in forested riparian and wetlands 
environments
*            Ability to effectively plan and organize work activities and to 
prioritize task completion to meet schedules and deadlines
*            Experience in communicating research results to the scientific 
community via technical reports and journal articles, publications, conference 
presentations and seminars, including the ability to make effective oral 
presentations to both scientific and non-scientific audiences

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

*            Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to 
collaborate effectively with a diverse, interdisciplinary team
*            Ability to provide leadership and facilitate the activities of 
diverse groups of professional natural resource scientists
*            Proven interpersonal and leadership skills to effectively train 
and guide field assistants
*            Ability to facilitate effective problem-solving situations
*            Ability to simplify and explain complex scientific data to general 
audiences

SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

*            Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
*            The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
*            Must have a valid driver's license and have two years of driving 
experience
*            Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
