Dear Colleagues,

The LTER Urban Aquatics Working Group is organizing a special session at
the Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting in Portland, OR.

Our session (031) is titled: *A city is a city is a city? Comparative
analyses in urban aquatic ecosystems. *http://www.sgmeet.com/
jasm2014/sessionschedule.asp?SessionID=031

This session will help build a community of researchers to expand the scope
of urban aquatic ecosystem studies to address the data and knowledge gaps
by 1) highlighting commonalities among existing studies and 2) featuring
examples of new synthesis efforts. We propose to hold a discussion at the
end of the session to explore opportunities and challenges for integration
across systems.

We invite you to submit abstracts to this session, described below.
Abstracts must be submitted by 7 February 2014. Submission Link -

Special session 031 - A city is a city is a city? Comparative analyses in
urban aquatic ecosystems

Aquatic ecosystems in urban environments are highly modified by human
activity, engineering, and design. Urban aquatic ecosystems are also
varied: from streams draining small, suburban watersheds to buried streams
in pipes; from retention basins and ponds to bioretention cells; from
natural lakes and wetlands surrounded by urban development to constructed
lakes and wetlands. These systems are critical in delivering ecosystem
services to urban residents, who comprise over 80% of the US population.

Comparative analyses of the effect of urbanization on aquatic ecosystem
function are uncommon. We wish to facilitate synthesis across types of
urban aquatic ecosystems and across climatic regions and biomes. This Joint
Aquatic Sciences Meeting presents a unique opportunity to bring together
researchers from different perspectives and disciplines.
