DIRECTOR, SCIENCE ACTION CENTER THE FIELD MUSEUM Founded in 1893, the Field Museum is one of the world's top research and educational institutions. Its Science Action Center (<http://fieldmuseum.org/explore/department/ecco>http://fieldmuseum.org/explore/department/ecco) translates museum science into lasting results for conservation and cultural understanding. The Center works at the interface of the biological and cultural/social sciences, working directly with local people. Current geographies include areas with the greatest concentration of species (the Andes-Amazon region) or greatest concentration of people (the Chicago region). Science and Education's new structure and strategic plan create a special opportunity for the growth and sustainability of the Action Center, including increased collaborative work within the Museum and participation in a major fundraising effort to be launched in 2014. The Director, Science Action Center will lead the conservation programs at The Field Museum, with the goal of generating large-scale advances in biological conservation and cultural understanding in the Chicago region and around the world. This is a leadership position in the Museum, reporting directly to the Vice President of Science and Education and working closely with the directors of the Museum's other two science centers (Collections and Integrative Research).
  Job Duties
  Responsibilities include:
* Sustain the Center's record of generating significant on-the-ground impacts in conservation and cultural understanding by implementing the new strategic plan and developing initiatives in line with the plan. * Oversee projects, partnerships, and a staff of ecologists, social scientists, and educators in the Center's Tropical and Urban Programs. * Lead a large-scale expansion of the Center, incorporating new projects, staff members, and geographies. * Provide strategic and pragmatic input to the Museum's President, Vice Presidents, board of trustees, and public program staff to ensure productive conservation programs with high visibility. * Serve as the face of conservation action at The Field Museum, developing and overseeing public-relation efforts in collaboration with Marketing and Public Relations. * Develop relationships with new donors and emerging funding opportunities in coordination with the VP, Science & Education and with Institutional Advancement.
  Qualifications
* A recognized, experienced leader in conservation * Significant experience in and appreciation for the social component of conservation * Ph.D. in a natural history science or a closely related field, with a strong grounding in field and museum work * Experience managing a diverse team of professionals in a results-oriented setting * A history of successful partnerships with non-governmental organizations, universities, and public officials * Work experience in the tropics, in Chicago, or in other urban settings * An excellent writer, communicator, and synthesizer * Ability to think quickly, solve problems, and promote collaborations
