DUTIES (specific): The work will contribute to a large collaborative
project investigating the potential effects of altered moisture and fire
regimes on aspen under climate change. As part of this effort, the
biological science technician will conduct field sampling and collection in
aspen stands recovering from recent fire. Duties will include measuring
tree heights and diameters, collecting tree cores and cross-sections,
assessing trees for disease, herbivory, and other damage, identifying and
measuring aspen-related shrub species, and collecting soil samples. Field
work will take place across a broad study area that includes eastern
Oregon, central Idaho, and western Wyoming/Montana.

The GG-06 biological technician will serve as the crew leader for a
2-person field team sampling aspen stands throughout the study area. The
crew leader will be responsible for ensuring that accurate and credible
data is collected by the field crew. The crew leader will lead efforts to
collect samples, identify and measure site vegetation, and will be
responsible for managing crew logistics. Other major duties include
collection of GPS points, driving on poor and sometimes muddy roads,
accurately recording ecological data, data entry, and calibration and
maintenance of technical field equipment. The technician may also assist
with site selection protocols to identify suitable study site and plot
locations. Field trips will often require extensive driving. Good
organizational skills, proficiency with technical equipment (including GPS,
personal computer, and digital camera), map reading, and field collection
protocols are required. Incumbent should have had or be willing to take
First Aid and CPR prior to employment.

Field work will involve exposure to extreme temperature and weather
conditions. The field crew will work independently with extensive stays
(up to 10 days) in remote locations. Field trips will include extended
periods of backcountry camping. Candidates will be chosen based on their
combination of experience and education. Preferred candidates will have
previous experience leading small field crews in remote field locations,
and will also have extensive experience working in forest ecosystems.

*ADDITIONAL INFORMATION*: The work involves long hours spent standing,
bending, walking, and a great amount of physical exertion. Tree collection
may involve the use of a saw. The incumbent may be required to lift
containers and backpacks weighing up to 35 pounds in the performance of the
assignment. Work could possibly be done in 10 -12 hours per day; hours can
include all times of day and night, and will vary during the employment
term with weather and field conditions. Core hours will typically be 6:00
AM to 4:30 PM. Travel expenses will be paid by the project at either
standard federal per diem or a camp rate per diem.
