NATURAL AREAS CONSERVANCY WETLANDS RESTORATION
SPECIALIST / LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT Full-time
Position, New York City, New York BACKGROUND
The Natural Areas Conservancy (NAC) is a
not-for-profit organization created to work in
partnership with the NYC Department of Parks &
Recreation to restore, protect and manage a
network of green and blue space that promotes a
healthy, livable and diverse New York City. The
NAC is tasked with expanding and diversifying the
protection, management and restoration of 10,000
acres of forests, wetlands and grasslands
overseen by the Parks Departments Natural
Resources Group (NRG). This public/private
partnership will unify the identity of NYCs
natural areas, increase public awareness and
volunteerism and integrate advanced technology.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES The Natural Areas
Conservancy (NAC) has an opening for a
restoration specialist / landscape architect
(Specialist), or designer, with wetlands,
ecological restoration, or green infrastructure
design expertise, who will help advance
identified wetlands restoration opportunities
from the feasibility assessment to concept and
final design stages. The Specialist will help
work in close collaboration with NRGs
professional wetland staff, and NACs Coastal
Restoration Project Manager to identify priority
restoration or creation sites and develop water
sensitive designs based on ecological and
physical principals and processes at the site. At
new sites, the Specialist will develop
restoration concepts into functional designs for
the purposes of better estimating costs,
obtaining permits, or securing funding. Where
funding has been secured the Specialist will
develop documents for construction, including
final designs, cost estimates and specifications.
In addition, the Specialist will work with
resource managers and scientiststo develop
management and maintenance plans for existing and
constructed wetlands, and with wetland ecologists
to help conduct ecological assessmentsto inform
wetlands restoration and protection planning and design.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
h Reviewing proposed wetlands restoration,
creations and green infrastructure projects across the city
h Compiling, analyzing and interpreting data and
other information and presenting results
h Preparing conceptual designs, functional, and final restoration designs
h Developing construction specifications and cost estimates
h Preparing technical reports on project status
for NAC, NRG and grant funders.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS An undergraduate
or graduate degree in landscape architecture or
design, ecology, environmental engineering, or
related field, and 2-4 years experienceworking as
a designer on ecosystem, stream or wetland
restoration or green infrastructure projects. 2
PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
h Expertise in CAD
h Experience in using GIS for mapping and analysis
h Knowledge of soils and native plants for restoration design
h Knowledge of wetland plant palettes
h Experience working with disturbed landscapes
h Excellent analytic and writing skills
h Experience writing grant or project proposals
h Experience collaborating with multiple
stakeholders and agencies through design review context
h Familiarity with wetlands regulations
h Demonstrated ability to conduct research and work independently
h Interest in and ability to conduct field work
SCHEDULE& SALARY The position is currently funded
for one to one and a half years with a target
start date of May 1, 2014. Salary is commensurate
