I am seeking volunteer field assistants to conduct field research in Panama.
The project investigates
the behavioral ecology of Northern and Wattled Jacana hybridization in western
Panama. Jacanas
have a unique polyandrous mating system and exhibit sex-role reversal. The work
involves
behavioral observations, color-band re-sighting, and mistnetting at multiple
populations across the
hybrid zone. Field conditions are hot, humid, buggy, and muddy, and sites are
often located on
farms with smelly pigs or cattle. Living conditions are basic and vary from
site to site, from camping
out to staying in hostels. Housing and food will be provided, but the applicant
will be responsible for
travel to and from Panama City. Position duration is approximately
June-September.

Applicant must be comfortable working and living in tough tropical conditions,
be highly motivated,
hold a valid international passport, and work well both as a team and
individually. Previous tropical
bird research experience, mist-netting and banding experience, valid driver’s
license, and basic
Spanish language ability are all preferred.

To apply: Please send a resume, contact information for three references, and a
cover letter to SARA
LIPSHUTZ (EM: [email protected]). Feel free to contact Sara with any
questions you might have.
Application Deadline: Applicant review will begin immediately and will continue
until all positions are
filled.
