Hello Ecolog-L:

Does anyone know why the Shannon (or Shannon Weiner, Shannon-Weiner)
diversity index abbreviated with the letter H?

Is the answer related to the first letter of the last name of Hulbert
(citation below)?

Hulbert, S. H. 1971. The nonconcept of species diversity: a critique and
alternative parameters. Ecology 52:577-585.

If you now the answer, just shoot me an email ([email protected]).
I'd doubt that: Shannon used H in his 1948 paper, and got it from Boltzmann:

(see Theorem 2 on p11, and also Wikipedia)
