Field Technician I, II or III for Salt Lake City, Utah and Tucson Arizona

The Field Technician reports to the Field Operations Manager and will be hired at a Field Technician I, II, or III level depending on skills, education and previous experience. The Field Technician I will be trained in and have primary responsibility for routine maintenance, field calibration and repair of scientific instruments and associated infrastructure. The Field Technician II is the lead instrumentation specialist after initial instrument installation. This role will have primary responsibility for instrument and infrastructure maintenance at tower and aquatic sites. They will be the technical lead performing routine maintenance, field calibration, and repair of scientific instruments and associated infrastructure. The Field Technician III is the shift lead performing and supervising routine maintenance, field calibration, and repair of scientific instruments and associated infrastructure. The Field Technician III will have primary responsibility for coordinating instrument and infrastructure maintenance and troubleshooting at tower and aquatic sites. The Field Technician III will have additional roles and responsibilities assisting the Field Operations Manager with management of the Domain Support Facility, hiring and training seasonal field staff, and acting as manager in the absence of the Field Operations Manager.

 Primary Responsibilities:

• Test, troubleshoot and operate instruments, calibration equipment and test fixtures.

• Inspect and maintain civil infrastructure including boom arms, sensor mounts, towers, boardwalks and instrument huts.

• Assist the NEON Systems Engineering Product Team with instrument installation and testing (approximately the first 6 months).

• Record activities, completed work and trouble tickets according to Field Operations protocol.

• Inspect, maintain and operate field, safety and laboratory equipment.

• Assist the Field Operations Manager with recruiting and training of seasonal field personnel.

• Assist the Field Operations Manager with materials planning, inventory and ordering.

• Follow NEON Safety and Field Operations policy and procedures.

 Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills:
Field Technician I
• Associate’s degree with minimum 3 years of related experience or Bachelor’s degree with 1 year related experience in ecology, environmental sciences or related scientific instrumentation discipline preferred. • Related experience includes performing basic maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting and repairs on ecological/environmental scientific instrumentation, e.g. aquatic, meteorological or atmospheric sensors. Specify years of applicable experience in each discipline on application.
Field Technician II
• Bachelor’s Degree in ecology, environmental sciences or related scientific discipline. Equivalent education and experience may be considered. • Three (3) or more years’ experience performing basic maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting and repairs on ecological/environmental scientific instrumentation, e.g. aquatic, meteorological or atmospheric sensors. Specify years of applicable experience in each discipline on application.
Field Technician III
• Bachelor’s Degree in ecology, environmental sciences or related scientific discipline. Equivalent education and experience may be considered. • Five (5) or more years’ experience performing basic maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting and repairs on ecological/environmental scientific instrumentation, e.g. aquatic, meteorological or atmospheric sensors. Specify years of applicable experience in each discipline on application. • Experience in scheduling, training, leading and auditing the performance of field crews.
All Technician Levels
• Experience should include performing scientific data entry and data management. • Ability and willingness to work on towers ranging in height from 24 feet to 300 feet including ascending and descending multiple flights of stairs on instrument towers.
• All positions must possess a valid US driver’s license.
• Ability and willingness to travel for a minimum of one to two overnight stays every two weeks is required. • NEON will take into consideration qualifications for specific and diverse experience in the following areas:
